The simple version of what "mail forwarding" means is
that you can have, in essence, two email names (addresses).  
The first one is the one you already have, and the second
one is 
(for example ).

Anything sent to the mellman.net address will actually get
forwarded to your current email address.

There are two reasons you might want this:

1. mellman.net is simple, and closer to your real name.
2. If you ever change your current email address your
   mellman.net name remains the same (forever, and no 
   matter how often you change your other email address).
