The simple version of what "mail forwarding" means is
that you can have, in essence, two email names (addresses).  
The first one is the one you already have, and the second
one is

Anything sent to the address will actually get
forwarded to your current email address.

There are two reasons you might want this:

1. is simple, and closer to your real name.
2. If you ever change your current email address your name remains the same (forever, and no 
   matter how often you change your other email address).
